Our classes have been having such a special time visiting the ducklings in the art room! 🐣🎨 Students are gently petting their soft down feathers, carefully observing how they preen to spread oil and keep their feathers waterproof, and watching them grow a little more each day. 🪶💛

After spending time observing, students are doing kid writing and summaries to share what they’ve learned. They’ve been exploring the duck life cycle—from egg, to embryo, to hatching (“unzip & pip!”), to duckling, and learning it takes about 28 days to hatch! 🥚⏱️ They’ve also learned how the incubator keeps eggs warm and how the brooder box, with a heat lamp, food, and water, helps keep the ducklings safe and healthy. 🔥💧🥣

Students are even learning fun facts like how ducks have webbed feet for swimming, how preening helps make feathers waterproof, and the names of different duck breeds like Saxony, Khaki Campbell, and Rouen. 🦆🌊

We love seeing their curiosity, gentle care, and excitement as they learn through this hands-on experience! 💕

🐣💚 Ducklings Are Hatching at Pittston Area Primary Center! 💚🐣
What an exciting day in our Art Room! We began the school day with one duckling, Clover, and by the end of the day four more ducklings joined the flock — Emerald, Forest, Hunter, and Sage!
In honor of ☘️ St. Patrick’s Day, all of our ducklings were given names inspired by shades of green.
Students were able to observe the hatching process throughout the day both in person and through our live stream, watching the amazing moment when the ducklings pip and unzip their shells. It has been a wonderful hands-on learning experience about life cycles and animal development!
The ducklings will remain in the incubator until they are completely dry and fluffy before moving to the brooder.

🐣🦆 Ducklings Are Almost Here at Pittston Area Primary Center! 🦆🐣
For the past three weeks, students at the Pittston Area Primary Center have been learning about ducks while our eggs develop safely in the incubator. If all goes as planned, our ducklings should begin hatching next week!
Students explored the hatching process by creating a fun duckling collage. Their artwork shows the exciting moment when a duckling begins with a tiny “pip” (the first crack in the egg) and then “unzips” the shell to hatch into the world!
They also learned that ducklings are covered in soft down feathers, and students recreated that fluffy texture in art using sponge painting techniques.
Throughout the project, we’ve been monitoring the eggs’ development through candling, which lets us safely observe the growing ducklings inside the eggs. Students have also been learning about where ducks live—both on farms and in the wild—and why they need a water source like a pond for dabbling, finding food, and staying healthy.
The excitement is growing as we get closer to hatch day. Stay tuned for updates as our ducklings get ready to make their big debut! 🐥✨
