Dear Parents/Guardians:

We are members of the Junior Leadership Northeast Class of 2026. Junior Leadership
Northeast is a non-profit based in Wilkes-Barre, PA, designed to help develop students into
better leaders in their schools and in their community. Every year, members of Junior
Leadership Northeast complete a community impact project.

Our team is “The River Readers”, and our community impact project will partner with the United
Way of Wyoming Valley to help create opportunities for children in the region to improve
proficiency in reading and learn to love it! The United Way of Wyoming Valley, a social service
organization dedicated to helping break the cycle of poverty by focusing on education and
children’s health, will hold its annual book drive to benefit students throughout Luzerne County,
and we need your help!

If you are receiving this letter, your child’s school is collecting donations for the book
drive. We ask that donations be new or gently used books on a kindergarten to 5th-grade
reading level. Please do not send in books that are vulgar or inappropriate. All donations
are greatly appreciated!

The annual book drive will be held from Monday, March 9th, through Friday, March 27th,
2026, in your child’s school. Books may be sent to school with your child for donations
through those dates. Donation boxes will be placed in every child’s school and collected
weekly.

Every book counts to make this book drive a success, and we are counting on you! Thank you
for any and all the help that you can provide.

Sincerely,

The River Readers

Virtual Learning Day – February 23, 2026

The winter weather has definitely caused us with more scheduling adjustments than usual. We’re so thankful that the worst of the predicted storm stayed east of us, but we know many areas are still dealing with snow and icy conditions this morning. We hope everyone is staying safe. Also, we truly appreciate your understanding and support as we adjust plans to keep our students safe, while ensuring learning continues smoothly.

Today will be a Virtual Learning Day for all students from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Our goal is to make the day productive, flexible, and supportive for every student while keeping learning on track from home.

What to Expect Today
All assignments, directions, and learning objectives are posted in Schoology/SKYWARD by the start of the school day.
Each teacher has explained how students will be marked present, such as submitting an assignment, completing a quiz, or responding to a discussion post.
Due dates and times are listed in Schoology so families can easily see what’s expected.
Teachers will be available throughout the day (9–2) to answer questions through Schoology messages or district email.

For Elementary Families K-2

Students using packets will find clear labels with subjects, dates, and a daily checklist.
A cover letter explains what to complete each day, how long each task should take, and how to return finished work.
Teachers will stay in touch with families using Skyward notifications or emails to share updates, encouragement, and reminders.
Some classes may also post short videos or fun digital activities to help students stay engaged and connected.

Communication and Support
Please reach out to your child’s teacher and/or principal during school hours if you have any questions or encounter challenges with assignments or technology.
All building principals and school counselors are also available by email throughout the day to offer support and guidance. Don’t hesitate to contact them if you need assistance or have concerns.

Dear Pittston Area Families,

We would like to take a moment to thank you for your continued understanding, cooperation, and flexibility throughout this winter season. The recent stretch of snow, ice, and frigid temperatures has certainly brought many challenges, and we truly appreciate your patience as we’ve navigated delays, closures, and virtual learning days to prioritize the safety of our students and staff while continuing to meet the educational needs of all learners.

Through each schedule change, our teachers and staff have remained dedicated to providing students with meaningful, engaging instruction to keep learning on track. We know that these frequent changes can be difficult for families to manage, and we are deeply grateful for the support you’ve shown in helping your children stay connected and focused.

Please remember that if you ever have questions or concerns about instruction or scheduling during weather-related disruptions, you are always encouraged to contact your building administrators. Consistent communication between home and school continues to be vital during these times.

Even with the challenges that winter brings, our goal remains to ensure that every student receives the most meaningful and timely education possible. The district also remains focused on maintaining a careful balance between snow days and virtual learning days as needed for the remainder of the winter season, so that we can continue prioritizing both safety and academic progress. State testing windows and supports for students are considered in our decision-making process during weather-related disruptions to ensure our ongoing efforts to monitor and promote academic progress remain on track.

Thank you again for your patience, partnership, and commitment to the Pittston Area School District.

Virtual Learning Day - January 28, 2026

Virtual Learning Day Reminder for Pittston Area Families (January 28, 2026)

We hope everyone is staying safe, warm, and comfortable today! The weather continues to be challenging, and we truly appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we made a late change from a delay to a virtual day due to reports of impassable roads.

As we continue remote learning today, our teachers are providing meaningful and engaging work to keep students on track with their learning. Please encourage your child to participate fully and reach out to their teachers if any questions or difficulties arise. Consistent communication between families and our school team is especially important right now, and we’re grateful for your cooperation and support.

The district is also reviewing current bus stop locations and routes to ensure that buses can pick up and drop off students as safely as possible. We appreciate your patience as adjustments may be made to improve safety and accessibility for all students during winter conditions. With the help of these bus stop adjustments, we anticipate safely welcoming our students back into the buildings tomorrow and returning to in-person learning as soon as conditions allow.

Today is a Virtual Learning Day for all students from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Our goal is to make the day productive, flexible, and supportive for every student while keeping learning on track from home.
