Virtual Learning Day Reminder for Pittston Area Families (January 27, 2026)
Dear Pittston Area Families,
We hope you are safe, warm, and comfortable on this frigid morning! The winter weather has definitely caused us with more scheduling adjustments than usual. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation as we navigate through this extremely cold and snowy winter, while keeping our students safe and maintaining quality education a priority.
Today is a Virtual Learning Day for all students from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Our goal is to make the day productive, flexible, and supportive for every student while keeping learning on track from home.
What to Expect Today
All assignments, directions, and learning objectives are posted in Schoology by the start of the school day.
Each teacher has explained how students will be marked present, such as submitting an assignment, completing a quiz, or responding to a discussion post.
Due dates and times are listed in Schoology so families can easily see what’s expected.
Teachers will be available throughout the day (9–2) to answer questions through Schoology messages or district email.
For Elementary Families
Students using packets will find clear labels with subjects, dates, and a daily checklist.
A cover letter explains what to complete each day, how long each task should take, and how to return finished work.
Teachers will stay in touch with families using Skyward notifications or emails to share updates, encouragement, and reminders.
Some classes may also post short videos or fun digital activities to help students stay engaged and connected.
Communication and Support
Please reach out to your child’s teacher during school hours if you have any questions or encounter challenges with assignments or technology.
All building principals and school counselors are also available by email throughout the day to offer support and guidance. Don’t hesitate to contact them if you need assistance or have concerns.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our school district and students.
Stay warm and have a wonderful day of learning!
John A. Haas, Assistant Superintendent

Pittston Area Baseball Celebrates Historic 2025 Season
The Pittston Area School District proudly honored the 2025 Varsity Baseball Team and Coaches for their record-breaking accomplishments during a special ceremony held on January 3, 2025, during the boys’ basketball game against Hazleton. Players and coaches were recognized with District Championship Rings and commemorative keepsake baseball bats, generously provided by the PA Baseball Boosters, to celebrate their remarkable achievements and lasting contributions to Pittston Area athletics.
Under the leadership of longtime head coach Paul Zaffutto—who has guided the program for 27 years—the Patriots have built a legacy of excellence, claiming seven District 2 Championships and multiple appearances in state playoff games. The 2025 season, however, marked a truly historic milestone: the first undefeated regular season in Pittston Area Baseball history.
The team finished the regular season with an extraordinary 22-0 record, producing seven shutouts and outscoring their opponents by a combined 213 to 41. Their success also included back-to-back District 2 Class 5A Championships in 2024 and 2025, as well as the 2025 Wyoming Valley Conference Championship—their first conference title since 2011.
With ten varsity players already committed to continuing their baseball careers at the collegiate level—and more sure to follow—the future of Pittston Area Baseball looks brighter than ever. These outstanding student-athletes have set a new standard of pride, perseverance, and sportsmanship, leaving an enduring mark on Patriot history.

As we get ready for winter break, I want to take a moment to thank you for all the support and kindness you’ve shown this year. Whether it’s helping with homework, showing up to events, or simply supporting from home, your teamwork with our schools makes such a difference for our students.
It’s been a busy and successful first 2 quarters at Pittston Area. Our students continue to impress us with their hard work, creativity, and care for one another in the classroom, performing on stage, competing in athletics, and giving back through community service. Our teachers and staff have gone above and beyond to create learning experiences that challenge and inspire. It’s truly something special to see every day.
As the holidays begin, I hope all of our Patriot families find time to rest, laugh, and enjoy being together. You’ve all earned it! Our schools will reopen on January 5, 2026, and we’ll be ready to start the new year full of energy and excitement.
Looking ahead to 2026, I’m excited for all that’s to come. We have an incredible community here at Pittston Area; one that looks out for each other, celebrates successes, and keeps moving forward together.
Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a bright New Year filled with hope and happiness!
John A. Haas, Ed.D. - Assistant Superintendent
